Running in the Dark with Seasonal Depression

I have always just “dealt” with the feeling of being trapped under a blanket that’s tied down with bricks. Running away from the starkness of February is no simple task. The warm blanket of despair and hopelessness is wrapped in negative self talk and withdrawal and isolation.

The Joy of Running “Paw”rtners

I doubt that Yeti will ever run the distances that Alta, a smaller and more energetic dog, did with me. But I can feel our bond becoming stronger. Whenever I pull on my running shoes, he comes to the door, does a downward dog stretch, and looks at me with anticipation.

Winter Supper

This month features a great little recipe that is a bit of a chameleon.
Although it started out intended for dinner, it works well for breakfast and lunch as well.

A Journey to All 50 States

In 2021, at age 40. I finally achieved my goal of visiting all 50 states. Most of them I’ve been to multiple times over the years, with there only being 3 states that I’ve only been to once.

Creating Your Own Training Plan Specific to Ultramarathons

I’ll start by stating that there is no one-size-fits-all training plan, however, having some foundation to start with can be very helpful. I also want to address that hiring a coach can also be a financial barrier for many, and to create inclusivity in the sport I believe making resources accessible for all is important.

Race Volunteering

Volunteering takes a servant’s heart. We all have it, we just have to find the moment that we want to let our long run sit until another day and open up our hearts to give back a little bit. The people you see along the journey make it worth it.

A Race to the Starting Line

It’s never too late to become a runner, I tell myself, huffing up a hill and trusting that the ache in my right calf was just that, an ache, and not a sign that my blood vessels were about to spontaneously combust, along with my lungs, and maybe my right rib.

When You Doubt Yourself, Lean on Friends

I’m volunteering at packet pick up for a local 50k and chatting with Eileen, a fellow volunteer and ultra runner. I mention that I think I want to try the 100 miler at Kettle Moraine in 2024. She casually tells me I should just bump up my Mines of Spain distance from the 100k to the 100M.

The Season

I have found myself in a running rut which I kept thinking it was such a negative place to be. I am a runner. It is part of my identity, that I self identify as. However, how can I call myself a runner if I am not running?
