Running in the Dark with Seasonal Depression

I have always just “dealt” with the feeling of being trapped under a blanket that’s tied down with bricks. Running away from the starkness of February is no simple task. The warm blanket of despair and hopelessness is wrapped in negative self talk and withdrawal and isolation.

One Foot in Front of the Other

One foot in front of the other… keep moving…  breath. The sport of ultrarunning shares a strikingly beautiful resemblance to life itself, a metaphor set in motion on a regular ole’ girl’s night out…

Lowering My Blood Pressure by Returning to a Plant-Based Diet

I really should have been paying more attention. I should have taken my increasing blood pressure readings more seriously. But after a year of blood pressure values slowly creeping up, at my annual GYN exam in October 2023, I was finally asked the question: “Are you on blood pressure medication?” I was stunned.

The Case for the Early Season Race

Running through the winter can be challenging and staying motivated takes some planning. I have found that signing up for an early season race can help me get me out the door when conditions are anything but perfect.

Menopause and Celiac Disease – Eating and Healing

Menopause wrapped me in a straight jacket of heat, fatigue, and joint pain that surpassed celiac. My attitude was off the charts. Running in the past carried me through so many hurdles but menopause won that race.

Beyond the Finish Line: Representation in Adventures

The Speed Project is a race but ultimately it is also about the journey for us as London Sole Sisters and the awareness we would like to bring about under-representation in the outdoors especially as we get older. We are strong and fearless and we want other black women out there to feel inspired!

Let’s Talk About Beans

I love to recommend beans as nutritionally dense plant-based protein. So many times, we only think about animal proteins, or tofu for plant-based, as good sources of protein. While they may well be good sources, they aren’t the only options out there.

Divine Timing

I’ve had weird experiences before, everyone does, a moment of déjà vu, seeing someone in a crowd that recently died, you question your sanity a bit, you pause, and the feeling sticks to you and never really leaves. It’s part of the mysteries of life: we don’t understand it, but there is something much deeper brighter and bigger out there.

Backcountry Itinerary Building 101

Building your backcountry itinerary is a multi-step process with a lot of logistics, but breaking it down into four categories helps make the planning more manageable. These categories are: sleep, eat, travel, walk.
